A home is listed for sale. The seller and buyer enter into a sale contract and the property listing becomes “pending.” The home is sold, and the sale price is noted.
The MLS is how all of this is tracked, and how everyone, real estate agents and consumers alike, know what they know about the housing market.
Where there is no MLS, people see homes online that have already sold, information is incomplete, and sale prices are difficult or impossible to find. The housing market becomes incomplete and confusing.

Keeping housing fair.
The MLS keeps the door to housing open for everyone, always. When a property is placed in the MLS, nearly every real estate agent working with buyers has access to it. The listing is distributed to thousands of public real estate websites and apps.
Without the MLS, housing would be dramatically less accessible, and more prone to bias. Doors would be shut on the dream of homeownership.
